Albion Middle School Ceramics
Information
Course Description:
In this course you will learn how to express your creative ideas 3-dimensionally. A variety of 3D media will be explored including paper mache, multi media and clay. You will have the opportunity to make functional objects like mugs and bowls as well as more creative and abstract sculptures. In addition, we will be studying outstanding examples of ceramic art from many periods and cultures, including Asian, Native American, and contemporary American. These sessions will help put an emphasis on students learning to evaluate projects and to be held accountable for their learning experience.
Supplies:
Students will be responsible for their own drawing pencils (no mechanical pencils), eraser, and 12-color pencil set, and a drawing pad. These items can be purchased at any local grocery store. There is a ceramics materials fee that covers all other supplies, tools, and materials. This has to be paid online, and if you have any questions contact Karen Payne in the main office. Students are urged to pay their fees as soon as possible, so that more clay and supplies can be purchased. Students need sketchbooks and a pencil each day they come to class.
Non- Required supplies:
The school has PRISMA color pencils for sale the cost 24 pencils are $16.00 and 48 are $27.00. Please bring a large button up shirt from home that can be kept at school to protect clothing. Students may be asked to bring items from home.
Grading:
Grades will mostly be based on actual ceramic projects, most of which will be worth 100 points. Grading criteria include: craftsmanship, durability, imagination, and creativity, all while staying in the parameters of the assignment, and above all, EFFORT. In addition, from time to time there will be short quizzes on ceramics vocabulary, techniques, and artist styles discussed in class. There will also be some homework: The students will need to have sketched designs for each of their clay projects. These will be located in the required sketch book students should bring everyday. Written papers will also be required.
Citizenship: Citizenship grades are based on school wide standards: following directions, arriving to class on time, being respectful toward the teacher and other students, not using cellphones and iPods, following the standards of the school dress code, and so on. Rules will be discussed and displayed to avoid any misunderstandings. In addition, ceramics is very messy…IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY THAT WE WORK TOGETHER AS A CLASS TO MAKE SURE THE ROOM IS CLEAN BEFORE THE END OF CLASS.
